Cruse
scanner-photographic system
FLAAR has selected
the Cruse scanner-photographic system
to install at its new headquarters at Bowling
Green State University. FLAAR has been looking for an overhead
reprographic digital photography system to scan large
objects that won't fit on top of an ordinary flatbed scanner.
The
ZBE Satellite looked nice when we
first saw it, but it's not been shown at recent trade shows. The Colex
system uses a scan back that does not seem to be adequate supported
in the USA. After a three year search at trade shows in Germany and
throughout the USA, and after checking with people that already had
the ZBE, we decided the Cruse offered abundant advantages. There are
just some things in life where it is not worth saving a few dollars
just to get a lower price. A job worth doing is worth doing well.
Why scan something important only to find out there was a better more
accurate Cruse system that you could have used. All
too often in my years as a typical low-budget student I tried to squeek
by with low-bid equipment.
It
took a while, but experience has taught me that better equipment makes
a tremendous difference in the final project. If you intend to enlarge
an image on a 72" wide ColorSpan
DisplayMaker XII, then you need an excellent digital image to
begin with.

The
model shown here is one of many. We prefer both kinds of lighting,
the patented synchron lighting (shown here). But when we are photographing
textiles or fossils, we would like to have side-lighting that is elevated
above the plane of focus, to provide a light-and-shadow situation.
We also like the option with vacuum system to keep the paintings or
other flatwork really flat.
As
soon as the Cruse scanner system is installed we will offer workshops
here in Ohio for those who might wish a test drive.

If
you want details on digital photography and marketing statistics,
and especially if you wish to meet the movers and shakers in this
industry, be sure to check out the Photographic Quality Digital Printing
Conference organized by IMI. If
you really want technical details on inkjet media, inks, and/or inkjet
printhead technology, and especially if you wish to meet the movers
and shakers in this industry, be sure to sign up for the next conference
organized by IMI. Their web site is http://imi.maine.com, contact
is imi@tdstelme.net. These seminars
are outstanding; the senior review editor of FLAAR usually attends
because he can get so much fresh information for the readers of the
FLAAR Reports in PDF format and the FLAAR Information Network of web
sites.
