What is the Giclée Chrome inkjet printer? Print E-mail

Epson makes the printheads and Mutoh makes the sheet metal that goes around the printhead system. Epson also makes the printheads for the Roland and the Mimaki.

Digital Painter is honest in that they clearly state that the true dpi of these Epson piezo printers is only 720 x 720 dpi. The "1440 dpi" is smoke and mirrors (on standard Mimaki, Roland, and Mutoh printers).

Evidently if you count diagonally you get "1440 dpi." Agfa is also honest; it rebrands the identical Mutoh printers and states only 720 x 720 dpi, not 1440. About once every three months someone writes us to ask our opinion on the Digital Painter system for doing fine art giclée prints.

The gicléeChrome series of printers are all Mutoh printers rebranded under the name gicléeChrome. Two other companies are dedicated to outfitting the Mutoh to accomplish fine art giclée quality. Accuplot (Mile High Engineering) and IT (Improved Technologies). IT is dedicated exclusively to fine art giclée printers, inks, and fine art papers (media). IT handles Iris giclée printers, the newer better Ixia giclée printer, and the I-Jet (which is the same Mutoh as all the others under the IT label). IT then fine-tunes the RIP (Wasatch RIP, one of the better RIP´s available).Accuplot is the house brand of Mile High Engineering Supply Company, which used to be mainly CAD but now includes the whole range of inkjet printing.

Back to Digital Painter system. It is indeed a good idea to buy an entire system all from a single place. I believe their RIP is rebranded from Onyx PosterShop. In any event, as with any other printer, it's one of the standard software RIP´s. They would not select a RIP that was inappropriate. Onyx is one of the well known brands.The scanner is traditionally the weakest link in any fine art giclée system. If you need to do giclée prints, if you have 35mm slides, no low-end Microtek and also not most Agfa nor most Umax scanners; none are high enough dpi. For 35mm you need a professional scanner if you intend to seriously produce fine art giclée prints.

This is a polite way of saying that if you intend to scan 35mm slides to produce your giclée images, the average flatbed scanner is totally useless. To translate, you are throwing your money away if you buy a cheap scanner. If you have 4x5 chromes to scan, that is a different matter. You can squeek by with a cheap scanner if you start out with the larger image inherent in a 4x5 inch transparency.Since the gicléeChrome is a basic Mutoh with standard Epson printheads, it is, in theory, perfectly capable of producing fine art giclée prints in your have the appropriate training and experience. However we definitely recommend the six color version as it has several features that did not exist on the older 4 color version.
